Kříž, Urbanovská and Brajerčíková on Visegrad and Germany

3.8.2020/ Zdeněk Kříž, Jana Urbanovská, and Stanislava Brajjerčíková published a text titled "Refugees, Energiewende and NATO deterrence: limits of German leadership in Central Europe." The text was published in the European Security journal by the Taylor and Francis publishing house.

The authors analyse Germany's role in central Europe, as Germany has been pushed to take increasing responsibility for international affairs during the last decade. Visegrad countries – the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, and Slovakia – seem to be proper partners to follow German leadership as they are economically and politically tied to Germany. However, in recent years, several discrepancies have appeared between Germany and the Visegrad countries – most prominently the refugee crisis, Energiewende (German energy transition), and the strengthening of collective defence military capacities on NATO's eastern flank.

The authors concluded that Germany is perceived as a source of unilateral pressure in Central Europe rather than as a leader.
