Levels of Justice: Liberalism, Cosmopolitanism and Human Rights

The book „Levels of Justice: Liberalism, Cosmopolitanism and Human Rights" pursues two general goals: First, to sketch in basic terms the debate on the issue of transnational or global justice. Second, by means of a critical exposition of the main points of cosmopolitan theories of justice, the author wishes to show that the competing and more moderate view of a global extension of principles and theories of justice is more plausible. The book has been published in Czech and can be ordered here.

The author's critique concerns two distinct levels: The philosophical one, relating above all to the issue of justification of principles of justice, and the practical-political one, covering the question of real-world feasibility of the proposed institutional structures. The author is led to believe that we should stay rather reserved with regard to both the desirability and the feasibility of cosmopolitan justice - at least in the form that it takes in the work of key contemporary authors. That, however, does not necessarily mean that we should uncritically embrace the particularistic stance, nor simply reverse the relation between politics and morality, nor resignedly affirm the existing status quo. The issue of universal rules governing human coexistence allows for steering a middle course, representing a point of intersection among several argumentative strategies employed in the text.
