The Future of Natural Gas Security in the V4 Countries: A Scenario Analysis and the EU Dimension

The Energy Security Section is glad to inform you that a new study is now available. The study outlines possible impact of new gas infrastructure projects on the gas flows in the Central Europe. The study is opened with SWOT analyses of the Czech, Hungarian, Polish and Slovakian gas sectors. Its key parts then focus on the Nord Stream, South Stream and Nabucco gas pipelines, on the system of interconnectors within the North-South Gas Corridor and on the two LNG terminals in Poland and Croatia. The text is further supplemented by the European Union dimension which profoundly influences the Member States' energy development.

The aim of the study is to outline possible impact of these projects on the gas flows in the region of the Visegrad countries (the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland and Slovakia). The authors collected an enormous amount of detailed information and expert data which are presented in a transparent form of SWOT analysis of the respective countries' gas sectors and a detailed analysis of the current state of the region's gas trade.

The data set serves as a basis for defining, analyzing and interpreting five scenarios that reflect possible combinations of the new infrastructure projects. For evaluation of these scenarios with respect to their effectivity, economic relevance and energy security, the authors use a specifically developed MEOS mathematical model and a series of indexes covering the key aspects of economic and political dimensions of gas trade. The text is further supplemented by the European Union dimension which profoundly influences the Member States' energy development.

The data used in the study were collected in Austria, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland and Slovakia in 2010. The study is available in English.
