IIPS Launches a Competition for Young Students on Best Essay on the Anniversary of the Fall of Totalitarian Regime

International Institute of Political Science of Masaryk University is going to launch a competition for students of secondary schools on best essay on the topic ‘Twenty Years of Freedom - or Democracy Is Not Matter of Course'. Competition is going to be conducted in cooperation with CEVRO Institut and Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung and is organized on the anniversary occasion of the end of totalitarian regime which had been ruling the life in most countries in Central and Eastern Europe including Czech Republic for more than forty years.

The essay should address the students' perception of democratic regime of our country, define its positive and negative aspects and discuss their view of life in an era of totalitarian regime. Moreover, students should write on how they see the suffering of political prisoners in communist totalitarian regime, or what they understand as a communist threat, the threat of totalitarianism and the loss of freedom nowadays.

Thirty best essays are going to get to the final round. In the final round, academic committee of the Masaryk University and CEVRO Institute will select winning essays which will be announced during the conference ‘Twenty Years of Democracy in the Czech Republic' on November 5th, 2009 in the headquarters of CEVRO Institute in Prague. Among others, also Professor Petr Fiala, the rector of Masaryk University, will take part in the evaluation committee.

Target group of this initiative is young generation which is nowadays losing personal experience with the totalitarian regime. The importance of historical experience after twenty years is necessary to avoid the relativistic approach to threats which we have to face nowadays as well. The project is part of the group of projects of IIPS conducted with the same goal, such as cooperation with website Nezapomente.cz, whose authors concentrate on reminding the public of the life in communist Czechoslovakia through various initiatives and events.
